From Tool to Hand Gesture - Eliciting Sounds

I have been wanting to get more information to therapists and parents for such a long time and I think I may finally be executing the vision.  I plan to experiment with delivering video clips of therapy and evaluation snippets. This particular clip is of Renee Roy Hill performing the transitional technique for moving from objects or tools to elicit sounds towards using hand gestures to elicit sounds.

Please write back and leave me comments for ideas or needs you know somebody has for further video clips. We want to create a log of clips that can be used for reference material for anyone trying to utilize OPT. Exciting!

PS - Just returned from China and hope to get up a little story about it soon.

  1. WOW!! This video is great.. I am not a Speech Pathologist rather I'm a Special Education student but I want to learn how to do this. Are you not going to have a training workshop here in the Philippines?

  2. Thankyou so much for the video, Sara.
I have been working on a child who is able to produce the initial consonant /m/ and /b/ by using the apraxia kits. But sometimes he would mix up to produce both sounds even I apply the tools on his mouth. I think the hand gestures can be a new method for giving him more sensation input to produce the sounds!
Besides, I have tried to use the bite blocks in Apraxia kits to elicit the vowels, but mostly I fail to elicit the sounds. The kids are just bite on the blocks, but without any sounds making, seems they don't know how to do both at the same time. Would you mind making a video clip to demonstate this exercise?
